Nigeria - Floods (ECHO 03 Oct 2025)
Pubdate: 10/3/2025 10:08:57 AM
  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting most of the states of Nigeria - 25 out of 36, mainly across the south - during the summer rainy season, causing severe floods and river overflows, particularly the Benue river, that have resulted in more casualties and widespread damage.
  • The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) report, as of 3 October, 230 fatalities, 681 injured people, approximately 121,000 displaced people, and a total of around 340,000 affected people across the country since mid June, where the worst affected states are Lagos, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Taraba, and Rivers. In addition, the same source and UN OCHA also report more than 42,000 destroyed or damaged houses throughout the affected states.
  • Over the next 96 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over most of the country.
  • The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency reported a growing risk of flooding along River Benue and Niger due to Lagdo Dam reservoir capacity, Cameroon, close to its maximal capacity.
